Kakegawa City is located in approximately the center of Japan, lying at 138°00' E, 34°45' N. Within Shizuoka Prefecture, the city stands at the meeting point of the western and central areas, and is central to the Toen district.

The city has a warm climate, with a yearly average temperature of approximately 17°C. Annual rainfall is around 1,800mm. Although snowfall is very rare, in winter a strong cold wind called 'Enshu no karakkaze' blows on many days making it feel colder than it actually is.

Kakegawa City's history is one of castles and historical roads. In the Warring States Period, Kakegawa Castle, Takatenjin Castle, and Yokosuka Castle were built as strategically important bases, and many warriors fought battles in the area. Also, the two post stations of Kakegawa and Nissaka flourished along the Tokaido Road, which linked Edo and Kyoto, and the city was also a base for the 'Salt Road' connecting Sagara and Shinshu, which was used to transport salt. Built in the form of a castle town, the city has a history of over 500 years.

With a deep afinity with nature, various local specialties have been cultivated over the years, such as tea and kudzu. There are many local delights unique to Kakegawa, including tea, strawberries, roses, kudzu cloth and local confectionery. Main transport arteries run through the city, including the Shinkansen bullet train, the Tomei Expressway and Route 1. With over 1 trillion yen in product shipment value, Kakegawa continues to grow as one of Shizuoka Prefecture's leading industrial and commercial cities.
